Approaches

The brute-force approach for each query is to run a BFS from the source node until the target is reached. This is correct because BFS on an unweighted graph returns the shortest path length. However, each BFS can touch all vertices and edges in the worst case, so processing Q queries costs O(Q(N + M)), which is far too large for the input limits.

The key observation comes from the special cycle condition. If every simple cycle forms a clique, then the graph can be decomposed into biconnected components where each component is a complete graph. This means that inside each block, any two vertices have distance one. Between blocks, movement is forced through articulation points, forming a tree structure of blocks.

This reduces the problem to distance queries on a tree of components, where each component is a clique. We construct the block-cut tree: each block is a node, and articulation points connect blocks. The distance between two original vertices becomes the distance between their corresponding nodes in this tree, with an adjustment of minus one for each intra-block shortcut effect. Algorithm Walkthrough

  1. Decompose the graph into biconnected components using a DFS with a stack. Each time we find a DFS low-link condition, we extract a block of vertices. The reason this works is that articulation structure naturally separates maximal subgraphs without articulation splits.

  5. For each query between nodes a and b, compute their LCA in the block-cut tree. The raw distance in the tree is the sum of depths minus twice the depth of LCA.
  6. Convert this raw distance into the actual shortest path length in the original graph. Since each traversal through a block node represents a real edge move but collapses intra-block movement, the final answer is (tree distance + 1) // 2.

The reason this final transformation works is that each real move between original vertices corresponds to two steps in the block-cut representation except for the endpoints.

Why it works

The block-cut tree preserves all articulation structure of the graph while compressing every biconnected component into a clique hub. Inside a clique, any movement is equivalent to a single step via the block node, so shortest paths never need to traverse more than one internal edge per component. Since any path in the original graph corresponds uniquely to a path in the block-cut tree and vice versa, shortest path computation reduces to a shortest path in a tree, which is exactly what LCA distance computes.
