A more dangerous failure case is when the tree is balanced. Picking nodes from different subtrees too early can force the LCA to jump back to the root, which is the worst possible outcome.

Approaches

A direct approach would be to enumerate all K-sized subsets of nodes and compute their LCA. This is correct in principle, since for each subset we can compute its LCA using repeated LCA queries or pairwise lifting. However, the number of subsets is C(N, K), which is astronomically large even for moderate N. Even if we fix K and try to optimize LCA computation, we still face exponential selection cost.

The key observation is that the LCA of a set of nodes depends only on their positions in the DFS order and their depths. If we think in terms of DFS traversal, nodes that are close in DFS order tend to cluster in subtrees. The deeper we go in a subtree, the more we can “pack” multiple chosen nodes without forcing their LCA to move upward.

This suggests that we should try to pick K nodes from as deep a subtree as possible. If we fix a candidate depth d, then we ask: can we find K nodes whose LCA is at least depth d? This becomes a feasibility question that can be checked by grouping nodes in subtrees below depth d.

We can reframe the problem: we want to find a node v such that there are at least K nodes in its subtree, and we want v to be as deep as possible. If we fix v as the LCA candidate, then any K nodes chosen entirely inside its subtree will have an LCA that is at least v, but could be deeper. However, to maximize LCA depth, we want to push v as deep as possible while still having enough nodes below it.

This turns the problem into finding a deepest node v such that the size of its subtree is at least K, and then selecting any K nodes inside that subtree. This works because all chosen nodes remain descendants of v, making v a valid common ancestor, and no deeper node can be common to all if we restrict ourselves within a subtree rooted at v.

Thus, we compute subtree sizes and depths, pick the deepest node with subtree size at least K, and output any K nodes from its subtree.

Algorithm Walkthrough

  1. Run a DFS from the root to compute two things for each node: its depth and its subtree size. This gives us structural information about how many nodes lie beneath each candidate ancestor.
  2. While doing DFS, also store the Euler traversal order of nodes or maintain a list of nodes per subtree. This allows us to later extract actual vertices belonging to a chosen subtree without re-traversing the tree.
  3. After DFS, scan all nodes and find those with subtree size at least K. Among them, choose the node with maximum depth. This ensures we are selecting the lowest possible valid ancestor.
  4. Once the best candidate node v is found, collect any K nodes from its subtree. Since all nodes in the subtree have v as an ancestor, their LCA is at least v.

Why it works

Edge Cases

For a single node tree, the DFS marks subtree size 1 and depth 0. Since K = 1, that node is selected directly and output is trivially correct.
