For each house i, we want the smallest ladder length L such that there exists a path from the ground to house i under these rules.
The key difficulty is that reaching a house does not necessarily require climbing directly onto it. You can enter at some other reachable house and then walk along the roof line.
The constraints allow up to 100,000 houses, with heights up to 1,000,000,000. This immediately rules out any solution that tries all possible ladder lengths per house or performs repeated graph searches. Anything worse than roughly O(n log n) will be at risk, and even O(n^2) is completely infeasible because each node would need to consider many possible paths.
A subtle failure case for naive reasoning comes from assuming you must start at the target house. For example, in the sample 3 4 2 6, house 2 (height 4) can be reached by first climbing onto house 3 (height 2), then walking to 4. A direct climb would require L = 4, but the optimal is 2.
Another failure case comes from assuming only local constraints matter independently per house. Movement is global: a small ladder might unlock a chain of transitions that reaches a far house whose own height is larger than the ladder, as long as entry happens elsewhere.
Approaches
A brute-force approach would fix a ladder length L and check which houses are reachable from the ground. For each L, we would simulate a graph traversal where we start from all nodes with height ≤ L and expand to neighbors if their height difference is ≤ L. For each house i, we could find the minimum L by increasing L and testing reachability.
This is correct but extremely expensive. The value of L can go up to 10^9, so trying all values is impossible. Even if we binary searched L for each node, each check would require a full traversal over n nodes, leading to O(n^2 log A) behavior.
The key observation is that the condition depends only on whether edges are “usable” under a threshold L. An edge between i and i+1 becomes usable exactly when L ≥ |a[i] − a[i+1]|. Once L reaches a certain threshold, connectivity between positions becomes monotonic: increasing L only adds edges and never removes them.
This turns the problem into a classic “minimum threshold for connectivity” problem on a path graph, where each edge has a weight equal to the height difference. However, there is an additional twist: we are not just connecting the whole graph, but asking, for each node, the minimum threshold needed so that it is connected to some node whose height is ≤ L (a valid entry point).
This suggests processing edges in increasing order of weight, building connectivity components gradually, and tracking for each component the smallest value of L needed so that the component contains at least one “entry-eligible” node. The entry-eligible condition for a component is determined by the smallest height inside it, since we can only enter at nodes with height ≤ L.
Thus each component needs to maintain the minimum height in it, and the moment a component’s minimum height becomes ≤ current threshold, that entire component becomes reachable.
This naturally leads to a union-find (DSU) process over edges sorted by weight.

Algorithm Walkthrough
We treat each adjacent pair of houses as an edge weighted by the absolute difference of their heights. We then process these edges in increasing order of weight, merging components as the ladder threshold increases.
- Compute all edges between i and i+1 with weight |a[i] − a[i+1]|. This encodes exactly when movement between those two roofs becomes possible.
- Sort these edges by weight. This ensures we simulate increasing ladder strength from small to large, activating movement constraints gradually in the correct order.
- Initialize a DSU structure where each house is its own component. Each component stores the minimum height of any node currently inside it. This is crucial because entry from the ground is only possible if the ladder is at least the height of some house in that component.
- Maintain an answer array initialized to infinity, representing the minimum ladder value at which each node becomes reachable.
- Sweep edges in increasing order of weight. When processing an edge with weight w, we union the two components it connects. After merging, we recompute the minimum height of the merged component.
- After each union, check whether the component now contains at least one node whose height is ≤ w. If yes, then the entire component becomes reachable at ladder length w, and we assign answer values for all nodes in that component that have not yet been assigned.
- Continue until all edges are processed. Any remaining unassigned nodes are isolated or only reachable at their own height threshold, so their answer is simply their height.
Why it works
The DSU processes connectivity exactly in the order in which edges become usable. At any threshold L, the union-find structure represents exactly the connected components of the graph where all adjacent differences ≤ L are allowed. A component becomes “activatable” precisely when it contains at least one node whose height is ≤ L, because that node can be directly climbed onto from the ground. Once a component is activated at some L, all nodes inside it become reachable at that same L, since internal traversal never requires exceeding L again. This ensures we assign each node the smallest possible activation threshold.
