A naive approach would try to simulate the process independently for every starting strand, recomputing the walk from scratch. This fails because each simulation may require scanning all bridges, leading to O(nm).
A second common pitfall is assuming that from each strand, only the smallest-distance incident bridge matters. This is not sufficient because after crossing a bridge, the “current time” increases, and future decisions depend on which bridges have already been passed. The interaction between time ordering and position makes the system globally coupled.
Another tricky case is when multiple strands share early bridges that interact in different orders. For example, a strand may have its first bridge very early, while its neighbor’s first bridge is much later, causing asymmetric movement chains that are not locally predictable.

Sort all bridges by distance. Now imagine a token placed on the starting strand. As we sweep bridges from closest to farthest, each bridge at strands (t, t+1) simply checks whether the token is currently on t or t+1. If it is, the token swaps to the other side; otherwise nothing happens.
This observation converts the entire spider movement into applying a sequence of adjacent transpositions to a single position. For a fixed starting strand i, the final ending strand is completely determined by this sweep, giving a deterministic function f(i).
So the original web defines a single permutation f over strands.
The problem then becomes: for each i, we want to modify this permutation process by inserting additional transpositions (extra bridges at chosen new distances) so that starting from i, the final position becomes s, and we want the minimum number of insertions needed.
Since we are allowed to add bridges independently for each query strand i, each i becomes an independent optimization problem over the same base permutation process.
The key structural simplification is that the original process is already a fixed sequence of swaps. Any modification we introduce is equivalent to inserting extra swaps at chosen points in this sequence. That means we are effectively editing a permutation process using adjacent swaps.
This reduces the problem to reasoning about how many additional swaps are required to force element i to end at position s under a fixed swap sequence.
The important insight is that each starting position follows a deterministic trajectory under the original swaps. If i already ends at s, no changes are needed. Otherwise, we need to “divert” its trajectory so that it reaches s, and the cheapest way to do that corresponds to inserting swaps that gradually move i along the swap-time structure toward s.
This leads to a graph interpretation: the original process partitions strands into movement paths ending at some terminal behavior, and each insertion allows us to locally redirect flow between adjacent strands. The optimal answer becomes the distance in this induced structure from i to s.

Why it works
The sweep over sorted bridges fixes a single global permutation process. Every strand has exactly one deterministic outcome under that process, which means all complexity is in how to alter a single trajectory rather than recompute it. Each added bridge only introduces one additional controlled swap in the global sequence, so the problem reduces to counting how many such controlled deviations are required to force one deterministic trajectory to coincide with another endpoint. This makes the optimal solution depend only on structural distances in the induced transition graph, not on the raw geometry of the web.

Edge Cases
