The key idea is that a ball is not limited to a single transformation. If a color A can be turned into B, and B can be turned into C, then A can effectively become C as well. So each original color has a whole set of colors it can eventually reach, and for each ball we are interested in the best possible value among all colors reachable from its starting color. Once every ball has been assigned its best achievable value, the task reduces to selecting k balls with maximum total value.
The constraints imply that both the number of colors and the number of transformation rules can be large, up to around 100,000 in typical versions of this problem. That immediately rules out any approach that tries to explicitly explore all reachable colors from each node independently. A naive BFS or DFS per color would repeatedly traverse the same structure and degrade to quadratic behavior in the worst case.
A subtle failure case for naive reasoning comes from assuming transformations are one-step only. For example, if we have transformations 1 → 2 and 2 → 3, and values p1 = 1, p2 = 5, p3 = 10, a naive one-step update would assign color 1 a value of 5 and stop there. The brute-force approach is to compute, for every color, all colors it can reach using repeated applications of the operations, and then take the maximum price among them. This can be done by running a graph traversal such as DFS or BFS starting from each node. While correct, this repeats the same traversal many times. In a dense graph, each traversal may visit almost all nodes, leading to roughly O(n · (n + m)) behavior, which is far too slow when both n and m are large.
The key structural observation is that the transformation graph defines reachability, and reachability is transitive. This immediately suggests compressing the graph into strongly connected components. Inside a strongly connected component, every color can reach every other, so all of them must share the same best achievable value, namely the maximum price inside that component.
Once we compress each strongly connected component into a single node, the resulting graph is a directed acyclic graph. On this DAG, the best value for a component is the maximum between its own internal best value and the best values of all components it can reach. This becomes a simple propagation problem over a DAG, which can be solved in reverse topological order.
After computing the best achievable value for each original color, each ball independently inherits the value of its starting color. The final step is simply selecting the k largest values.

Algorithm Walkthrough
- Build a directed graph where each color is a node and each operation xi → yi is a directed edge. This graph encodes exactly which transformations are allowed in one step.
- Compute strongly connected components of this graph. The purpose of this step is to group together all colors that can mutually reach each other. Inside such a group, any color can be transformed into any other, so distinctions between them no longer matter.
- For each component, compute its internal base value as the maximum price among all original colors inside it. This is the best value achievable without leaving the component.
- Build the condensation graph where each component is a node, and edges exist between components if there is any edge between their constituent original nodes. This graph is guaranteed to be acyclic because SCC compression removes cycles.
- Traverse this condensed DAG in reverse topological order. For each component u, try to relax its value using all outgoing edges u → v by setting value[u] = max(value[u], value[v]). This ensures that if u can eventually reach a better component, it inherits that best value.
- After propagation, assign each ball the value of its corresponding starting color’s component.
- Sort all ball values in descending order and sum the top k values.
The correctness relies on the fact that SCCs capture all cyclic mutual reachability, and the condensation graph preserves all remaining reachability relationships without cycles.
