However, each query may touch up to 10^5 elements. If we sort a segment of size n for every update, that is O(n log n) per operation. With q operations, worst case becomes O(nq log n), which is far beyond feasible limits. Even the LIS query alone would already dominate runtime.

The key structural insight comes from the value restriction. Since every element is between 1 and 6, the segment is not arbitrary data but a multiset over a tiny alphabet. This allows us to represent each segment by counts of each value instead of storing the exact ordering.

The second insight is about what LIS means in such a restricted domain. For a sequence over a small ordered alphabet, the longest non-decreasing subsequence inside a segment is fully determined by how many elements of each value exist and how they can be arranged. After a sorting operation, the segment becomes completely sorted, meaning it is already in non-decreasing order, so its LIS equals its length. For unsorted segments, we can still compute LIS using a greedy merge of counts in a structured way.

Algorithm Walkthrough

We build a segment tree where each node summarizes its segment using a fixed-size structure based on values 1 through 6. For each node, we store an array dp where dp[x] represents the length of the best increasing subsequence ending at value x inside that segment.

  1. For each leaf node, we initialize dp such that dp[a[i]] = 1 and all other entries are zero. This reflects that a single element forms a subsequence of length one ending at its own value.
  2. When merging two children, we want to combine subsequences from the left segment with those from the right segment. The left dp represents all subsequences that end in some value, and the right dp builds on top of that. For every pair of values i ≤ j, we can extend subsequences ending at i in the left child with sequences in the right child that start from j.
  3. We compute a new dp for the merged node by first copying left dp, then attempting to extend it using right dp while respecting the non-decreasing condition. Since the value range is only 1 to 6, we can explicitly check all transitions.
  4. For a type 1 query, which sorts a segment, we do not need to physically reorder elements. Sorting means the segment becomes fully non-decreasing, so its dp becomes maximal: every value contributes in order. We can overwrite the segment tree interval with a precomputed “sorted state” representation.
  5. For a type 2 query, we query the segment tree and merge dp representations over the range. The answer is the maximum value in the resulting dp array, since it represents the best ending value for an increasing subsequence.

Why it works is based on the invariant that each node correctly encodes all subsequences inside its segment grouped by their ending value. When two segments are merged, every valid subsequence in the combined segment must either lie fully in one side or be formed by concatenating a valid subsequence from the left with one from the right while preserving non-decreasing order. Because we explicitly consider all transitions between values 1 to 6, no valid subsequence is missed and no invalid one is introduced.
