Initially, each tourist starts in a fixed city. Over time, three types of operations happen. First, a segment of tourists, specified by a contiguous index range, may travel to a new city. Traveling changes their location and reduces their happiness by the length of the shortest path in the tree between old and new cities. Second, an event may occur in a city, increasing the happiness of all tourists currently located there by some value. Third, we may be asked to report the current happiness of a particular tourist.
The difficulty is that both location and accumulated value depend on a mixture of global city events and individual movement history. The tree structure makes travel costs nontrivial because distances are shortest paths in a tree, not coordinate differences.
The constraints are large enough that any solution must avoid per-query traversal over all tourists or naive recomputation of path lengths repeatedly. With up to 200,000 tourists, queries, and cities, anything quadratic in m or q is immediately infeasible. Even linear per operation approaches will not survive.
A subtle issue appears in travel queries: if a tourist is already in the destination city, they do not move and do not incur distance cost. This means we cannot blindly overwrite ranges; we must conditionally apply updates only to those whose current city differs.
Another important edge case comes from overlapping events and movement. A tourist may leave a city after some events have been applied, and later that city may receive more events. The tourist should not receive those later updates. This rules out storing only a global “total events per city” without tracking when each tourist was last in that city.
Approaches
A direct simulation approach would process each query literally. For a travel query, we would iterate over all affected tourists, compute tree distance via LCA, update their city, and maintain their score. For event queries, we would update all tourists currently in that city. For queries, we would recompute a single tourist’s value.
This is correct but fails immediately on scale. In the worst case, a single travel query touches O(m) tourists, and there are O(q) such queries, leading to O(mq), which is far beyond limits.
The structure suggests separating the problem into two independent components. One component is maintaining current city membership per tourist index with efficient range updates. The other is maintaining per-city global event accumulation with per-tourist snapshot tracking so that historical contributions are counted correctly.
For movement cost, each tourist independently accumulates distances along tree edges. This is additive over time, so we only need a fast way to compute distance between two cities and add it to a personal counter.
The key insight is that tourists can be treated as independent records indexed by id, while city-based effects can be stored globally with per-tourist “last seen city value” snapshots. This transforms event handling into difference tracking rather than replaying history.
To make range travel efficient, we use a segment tree over tourist indices. Each segment tree node stores whether all tourists in that segment currently belong to the same city. If a node is uniform and already matches the target city, we skip it. Otherwise, we descend until leaves and apply updates only where necessary. This guarantees that each tourist’s city changes only a logarithmic number of times across all operations.
Distance queries on the tree are handled using LCA preprocessing.

Algorithm Walkthrough
Preprocessing
We first root the tree arbitrarily and preprocess binary lifting tables for LCA queries. This allows computing distances between any two cities in logarithmic time in n.
We also build a segment tree over the m tourists. Each leaf corresponds to a tourist and stores their current city. Each internal node stores a single city value if the segment is uniform, otherwise it is marked as mixed.
We maintain three additional arrays per tourist: current city, accumulated travel cost, and a snapshot of the last known city event total.
Processing operations
- For a city event at city c with value d, we increment a global array
city_sum[c]by d. This represents total event value accumulated in that city over time. - For a travel query over a range [l, r] moving tourists to city c, we traverse the segment tree. When a node is fully inside the range and already uniform with city c, we do nothing. Otherwise, if the node is a leaf or partially mixed, we descend.
At each leaf we process a single tourist i. If their current city is already c, we skip them. Otherwise we compute distance from old city to c using LCA, add it to their travel cost, update their city, and reset their city snapshot to the current city_sum[c].

Why it works
The key invariant is that for every tourist, their contribution from city events is always measured relative to the moment they entered their current city. The segment tree ensures the city assignment is always consistent with the latest movement. Because we never retroactively modify past snapshots, each tourist only receives event increments from periods when they were actually present in that city. Travel cost is accumulated independently and only depends on actual transitions, so it is always exactly the sum of shortest-path distances of all movements performed by that tourist. The separation of concerns guarantees correctness: city events are global but time-windowed per tourist via snapshots, and travel is local and additive per transition.
