For each node, we care about the minimum value of a * B + b * W over all reachable paths.

This is a classic “min over linear functions” situation. Each path contributes a line in the (a, b) space, and we need to query the minimum over a set of linear forms. However, directly storing all paths is exponential.

The structural restriction saves us: because edges only go forward with bounded length, each node depends only on a small interval of previous nodes. This allows us to maintain, for each node, a small set of candidate “best states” represented as convex-hull-like structures over (B, W) pairs. We merge states from predecessors, keep only Pareto-optimal pairs, and then answer each query by evaluating a * B + b * W over a small candidate set.

The key compression idea is that dominated states can be removed: if one path has both more black and more white edges than another, it is never useful. This keeps the state space small in practice and ensures that merging remains efficient.

  2. We iterate nodes in order from 1 to n. When processing a node u, we propagate each of its states through outgoing edges (u -> v).
  3. If the edge is black, we transform a state (B, W) into (B + 1, W). If it is white, we transform it into (B, W + 1). This directly encodes how each path accumulates costs.
  4. We insert these new states into the list for v, but we immediately prune dominated states. A state (B1, W1) dominates (B2, W2) if B1 <= B2 and W1 <= W2 with at least one strict inequality. Dominated states can never produce better answers for any future query because they are worse in both dimensions.
  5. After merging all incoming transitions into a node, we sort and compress its state list so that it forms a Pareto frontier. This ensures that for increasing black counts, white counts strictly decrease.
  6. Once preprocessing is complete, each node has a compact set of candidate states.
  7. For each query (a, b, x), we compute the minimum value of a * B + b * W over all states in node x. This is a small linear scan over the Pareto frontier.

Why it works

Every path corresponds to a point (B, W) in a 2D cost space. The query evaluates a linear function over these points. Only Pareto-optimal points can ever be optimal for some positive a, b, because any dominated point is worse in both coordinates and therefore always yields a larger cost.
