Once edges above X are removed, the remaining structure is still a rooted forest, and the best downward path can be computed with a simple tree DP. For each node, we compute the best sum of a downward path starting from that node.

This turns the problem into a monotonic decision function in X. If a value of X allows a valid path, any larger X also allows it. That monotonicity makes binary search applicable over edge weights.
