The most direct approach is to treat each query independently and run Dijkstra from the source vertex ai until we reach bi. Dijkstra is correct because all edge weights are positive, so it always explores paths in increasing order of distance and guarantees the first time we settle bi we have found the shortest path.
The reason this is potentially acceptable is that each vertex has very small degree. Because edges only connect vertices within a window of size 10 in index space, each node can have at most 20 neighbors. This keeps the constant factor of each relaxation small, and makes the graph behave like a very thin sparse network rather than a dense one.
The brute force thought process would be to compute shortest paths between all pairs, but that would require either running Dijkstra from every node or using Floyd-Warshall. Both are far too slow for n up to 100,000. The observation that queries are independent and that the graph is sparse suggests that we should only explore the portion of the graph needed to answer each query, rather than precomputing global distances.
This leads to the per-query Dijkstra with early stopping. Instead of running until all nodes are processed, we stop as soon as the target node is extracted from the priority queue.

We process each query independently using a priority queue based shortest path search.
- Build the adjacency list of the graph from the given edges. Each vertex stores a list of pairs (neighbor, weight). This is necessary to efficiently traverse only valid edges without scanning all possible vertex pairs.
- For each query (a, b), first check if a equals b. If so, the answer is immediately zero because the shortest path from a node to itself requires no edges.
- Initialize a distance array filled with infinity values and set dist[a] = 0. We also initialize a priority queue containing the pair (0, a). This queue always keeps the next most promising vertex to process.
- While the priority queue is not empty, extract the vertex u with the smallest tentative distance. If this distance is already larger than the stored dist[u], skip it because it is outdated.
- If u equals b, we immediately return dist[u] as the answer for this query. This is valid because Dijkstra guarantees that nodes are popped in non-decreasing order of shortest known distance.
- Otherwise, iterate over all neighbors v of u. For each edge (u, v, w), attempt relaxation. If dist[v] > dist[u] + w, update dist[v] and push (dist[v], v) into the priority queue.
- If the priority queue empties without ever reaching b, then b is not reachable from a, and we output −1.
Why it works
The correctness comes from standard Dijkstra behavior. At any moment, the priority queue stores candidate shortest distances to frontier nodes. Once a node is popped, its distance is finalized because any alternative path would have had to go through a node with equal or smaller tentative distance, which would already have been processed.
Early stopping at b does not break correctness because the first time b is popped from the queue, its distance is guaranteed to be minimal among all possible paths from a to b.
