The key observation is that each pair (a, b) corresponds to a partition of vertices defined by the position of the global maximum in each component. The maximum label n plays a special role: in any valid tree, removing any edge separates the tree into exactly one component that contains n, and another that does not. This immediately implies that for every pair (a, b), one of them must be n for edges adjacent to n, and more generally, the structure can be oriented by thinking in terms of “which side contains larger global maxima”.
We can reconstruct the tree by treating these pairs as constraints that define how intervals of labels merge. A consistent construction emerges if we always connect the largest currently “active” vertex to a smaller one dictated by the pairs, ensuring we respect the monotonicity of maxima.
The standard solution reduces the problem to greedily building adjacency while maintaining that each pair corresponds to a unique edge whose removal isolates exactly the vertices up to its smaller maximum boundary. This becomes feasible because maxima impose a partial order that behaves like a tree decomposition over sorted labels.

Algorithm Walkthrough
We build the tree by repeatedly using the structure imposed by the maximum pairs.
- First, we group all pairs (a, b) and treat them as edges of an auxiliary multigraph on values 1 through n. This is not the final tree, but a constraint system.

Why it works
