A subtle failure case for naive greedy thinking appears when students compete for shared slots. For example, suppose student 1 can use slots {A, B}, student 2 can use {A}, and student 3 can use {B}. A greedy assignment that prioritizes student 1 might consume slot A or B too early and block a larger feasible subset. The correct answer depends on global structure, not local preferences.

Another issue arises if we try to independently match each student without coordinating assignments. Even if each student individually has an available slot, their choices can collide, producing an infeasible assignment for the whole subset.

Approaches

A direct approach is to try all subsets of students and test whether each subset admits a valid matching. For a fixed subset of size k, we can run a bipartite matching algorithm such as Kuhn’s DFS method or a max flow. If we do this for every subset, we end up doing up to 2^n matching checks, each costing at least O(E), which becomes astronomically large even for n around 20.

A more structured attempt is to observe that feasibility of a subset is exactly a bipartite matching condition. Instead of checking subsets, we can try building a maximum matching on the full graph. A key property of bipartite matching is that it already finds the largest possible number of vertices on the left side that can be simultaneously matched.

The key insight is that any subset of students that can be matched corresponds to a matching in the original graph, and conversely any matching defines a subset of matched students. Therefore, maximizing the size of the subset is equivalent to maximizing the number of matched students, which is exactly the size of the maximum bipartite matching.

This reduces the problem from subset selection to a single maximum matching computation.

Algorithm Walkthrough

We reduce the problem to finding a maximum matching in a bipartite graph where students are on the left and parallels are on the right.

  5. After processing all students, output the number of matched students, which represents the largest subset that can be simultaneously assigned.

The reason this procedure works is that it incrementally constructs a maximal set of disjoint assignments, and every augmentation strictly increases the number of matched students until no further improvements are possible.

Why it works

At any point in the algorithm, the current matching satisfies the property that no augmenting path exists with respect to the explored structure. By the classical theorem of bipartite matching, a matching is maximum if and only if there is no augmenting path. Since the algorithm continues until no augmenting path can be found from any unmatched student, the resulting matching must be globally optimal. Every matched student corresponds to one element of a feasible subset, and every feasible subset corresponds to some matching, so maximizing one maximizes the other.

The implementation follows the classical Kuhn matching structure. The adjacency list stores, for each student, all possible parallels they can be assigned to.

The match_to_student array tracks which student currently occupies each parallel. A value of -1 indicates a free slot.

The DFS attempts to assign a student to any available slot, and if the slot is already taken, it recursively tries to reassign the existing student elsewhere. The visited array prevents cycling within a single augmentation attempt.

Each successful DFS call increases the matching size, and we accumulate this count as the answer.

Edge Cases
