The constraint n up to 1,000,000 immediately rules out any quadratic or even n log n DP with naive interval checks. Any solution that repeatedly recomputes segment maxima or tries all split points will time out. We must maintain incremental structure and avoid recomputing ranges.
A subtle edge case arises from feasibility. For i < k, no group can even be formed, so the answer is forced to zero. Algorithm Walkthrough
We process elements from left to right, maintaining the decoded array on the fly.
- Decode each vi using vi = xi XOR c(i−1). This must be done sequentially because every value depends on the previous answer.

- Start building segments greedily from position 1. For the current segment, expand its right boundary as far as possible while tracking min and max. The moment we reach a point where extending further would violate optimal structure or we have satisfied the need to finalize a segment, we consider cutting.
- We are only allowed to finalize a segment if it has length at least k. This constraint forces us to sometimes continue extending even if the range becomes large, because cutting early is illegal.
- When we decide to cut at position r for a segment starting at l, we record the cost of that segment as max(v[l..r]) − min(v[l..r]) and propagate this as part of the answer for the current prefix.
- For each prefix i, the value ci is the maximum segment cost among all segments formed up to i in this greedy construction.
- If i < k, we directly output 0 because no valid segmentation exists.
Why it works
The key invariant is that at every cut point, the segment we finalize is the longest possible segment starting at its left boundary that still respects the rule that every segment must have at least k elements.
