A staircase path is not an arbitrary path. It is completely rigid in shape: it either alternates right then down repeatedly, or down then right repeatedly. So once you pick a starting cell, the rest of the path is forced, and it either walks along a zigzag going right-down-right-down or down-right-down-right, staying inside free cells. A single free cell is also a valid staircase.

Two staircases are considered different if they differ as sets of cells, not just endpoints. So even if two paths start and end in the same places but differ in shape or coverage, they are distinct.

The key difficulty is that updates flip cells, and after each flip we must recompute the total number of valid staircase-shaped connected patterns in the current grid.

Even a linear scan per query over all cells would already be borderline, but anything that enumerates paths or simulates them is immediately infeasible because the number of possible staircases can be large and overlapping.

A subtle point is that staircases are not arbitrary connected components, they are structured alternating-direction chains. This structure is what makes counting possible.

Approaches

A brute-force idea is to enumerate all valid staircases after each update. In a dense grid, each starting cell can generate $O(\min(n,m))$ staircases, and there are $O(nm)$ starts, so a full recomputation per query becomes $O(nm \cdot \min(n,m))$, which is far beyond acceptable for $10^4$ updates.

The key structural observation is that every staircase is fully determined by its leftmost or topmost “anchor” cell in the zigzag structure. More importantly, every valid staircase corresponds to a contiguous segment along a diagonal parity pattern: once you fix direction parity, the path alternates between two direction classes, meaning validity is equivalent to having a continuous run of free cells along a constrained 2D walk.

This reduces the problem from counting arbitrary paths to counting valid alternating segments in two disjoint parity systems. Each staircase is essentially a maximal or sub-maximal segment in one of two directed grids induced by the alternation rule.

So instead of enumerating paths, we maintain contributions of each cell to potential segments in two “staggered” grids. A cell can be part of at most one segment per direction class per structure, and updates only affect local continuity, meaning only nearby segment merges or splits need to be adjusted.

The final solution becomes a dynamic maintenance of segment counts in two interleaved graphs where each cell connects to at most two neighbors per pattern. Each update flips a node and affects only constant or near-constant neighborhood structure.

Algorithm Walkthrough

We model the grid as two independent bipartite direction systems, one for each staircase type. For each type, a valid staircase is a maximal alternating chain where every step is constrained to a fixed neighbor direction depending on parity.

We maintain, for each cell, whether it is active (free) and whether it connects to its successor in the alternating structure. Each staircase corresponds to a connected component in this functional graph, but with degree at most 2 in the induced structure.

Why it works

The invariant is that every staircase is uniquely represented as a maximal alternating chain in exactly one of the two direction systems. The alternation constraint guarantees that no valid staircase can be formed outside these pre-defined adjacency rules, and no staircase is counted twice because the two systems are disjoint by construction. Since each update only changes adjacency of one node, only chains touching that node can change, so the global count updates correctly using purely local modifications.

Edge Cases

A key edge case is a single cell grid. The algorithm must treat the only cell as one valid staircase regardless of toggles, and removing it must correctly produce zero.
