The key difficulty is that each update affects an infinite subtree, so simulating propagation directly is impossible. The constraints allow up to 500,000 queries and total path length up to 500,000, which implies we can afford something close to linear in path length per query, but anything that explores actual subtree expansion or repeated traversal of descendants is immediately infeasible. Even a single update touching all descendants would be unbounded.
A subtle edge case arises when multiple updates overlap on the same node. Since later updates overwrite earlier colors, we must ensure we correctly account for the most recent relevant update along the path, not all updates in the subtree. Another issue is that propagation depends on depth and direction, so even if we know a node was updated via an ancestor, we must correctly compute the induced color shift.
Approaches
A naive approach tries to simulate the operation literally. When coloring a node u, we recursively visit its left and right children, assigning colors and continuing indefinitely. This is correct in logic but immediately fails because each operation affects an infinite number of nodes. Even if we artificially cap depth, we would still process O(2^d) nodes at depth d, which is exponential and unusable under constraints.
The key observation is that we never need to explicitly maintain all colors. Each node’s final color depends only on the last update applied along the unique path from the root to that node. The propagation rule is deterministic: moving left adds +1 mod c, moving right adds -1 mod c. This means if we know that a node u was updated with base color x, then any descendant v has color x plus a signed contribution determined only by the path difference between u and v.
This reduces the problem to tracking, for each update, its effect as a value placed at a node, and answering queries by finding the most recent update that applies to an ancestor of the queried node. Since paths are given explicitly, we can treat each node as a string, and ancestor relationships correspond to prefix relationships. This suggests storing updates in a structure indexed by paths, and for each query, checking all relevant prefixes.
A more efficient view is to process updates as assignments at nodes, and maintain a hash map from path strings to the latest color assigned. Then, for a query node, we must consider all ancestors on its path and determine which update contributes to it. Each ancestor update contributes a color shifted by depth difference and direction parity, but crucially, only the deepest updated ancestor matters because it overrides all earlier ones in its subtree.
Thus, for a query, we scan upward along prefixes of the path and pick the deepest prefix that has been updated. That update uniquely determines the answer.

Algorithm Walkthrough
We represent each node by its path string from the root. We maintain a dictionary that stores, for each path, the last assigned color.
For a type 1 operation, we simply store the color at the exact path of the node being updated. We do not propagate to children.
For a type 2 operation, we must compute the color at a node by looking at all ancestors along its path, because the node inherits the most recent update among them.
- Convert the path string into all its prefixes, from shortest to longest. Each prefix represents a node on the path from the root to the target node.
- Traverse these prefixes from longest to shortest, because deeper updates override shallower ones.
- The first prefix found in the update dictionary is the relevant update for this node.
- If no prefix exists in the dictionary, the node was never painted and we output -1.
- Otherwise, compute the node’s color based on stored color and ignore propagation, because the stored update already represents the correct root-to-node propagation origin.
The reason we only need the deepest updated ancestor is that any update at a node overwrites the entire subtree beneath it, so anything higher becomes irrelevant for descendants.
Why it works
Each update defines a dominant “source of truth” for its subtree. If a node lies in multiple updated subtrees, the one with the deepest root is applied last and therefore determines the final color. Since updates fully overwrite subtree states, earlier updates cannot affect descendants of a later updated node. The prefix structure ensures that ancestor-descendant relationships are captured exactly by string prefixes, so selecting the longest matching prefix yields the correct governing update.
