For each query i, we must compute how much energy is required to ensure that all nodes in subtree(xi) are available in memory. Any node in subtree(xi) that is not already remembered must be “re-learned,” paying its energy cost hi. Once learned, it becomes available for future queries until it falls out of the sliding window of remembered problems.
So each query is essentially: maintain a sliding window over previous subtree unions, and at each step compute the cost of adding the current subtree minus what is already covered.
The constraints are extremely large. With up to 10^6 nodes and 2·10^5 queries, any per-query traversal of subtrees or explicit set maintenance is impossible. Even O(n log n) per query is far too slow. The solution must reduce subtree operations to something that can be updated incrementally in near logarithmic or logarithmic-squared time per event.
A naive approach would repeatedly traverse each subtree, but subtrees can overlap heavily, and repeated recomputation would explode. The real difficulty is that we need to maintain a dynamic coverage structure over a tree with insertions and expirations defined by a sliding window.
A subtle edge case arises when ki equals zero, meaning no memory is retained. In that case, each query is independent and must pay full subtree cost. Another corner case is ki being large, potentially covering all previous queries, which means memory only grows and never shrinks for long stretches, making lazy cleanup strategies dangerous if they assume bounded window sizes.

The brute-force idea is straightforward. For each query i, we compute the set of all nodes in subtree(xi), then subtract all nodes already covered by any subtree in the previous ki queries. For each uncovered node, we add its hi cost and mark it as covered.
This works conceptually because the memory is exactly the union of recent subtree sets, so we can directly simulate it. However, the cost is disastrous. A single subtree can contain O(n) nodes, and in the worst case each query may require traversing nearly the whole tree. With 2·10^5 queries, this becomes O(nm), which is completely infeasible.
The key observation is that we do not need to explicitly maintain sets of nodes per subtree. Instead, we can transform subtree membership into a linear interval using an Euler tour. Each subtree becomes a contiguous segment. Then the problem becomes maintaining coverage over an array where each query activates an interval, and expired queries deactivate their intervals after ki steps. The cost of a node is paid only the first time it becomes covered in the active window.
This shifts the problem into a dynamic interval coverage structure over a static array. We need to support adding and removing intervals over time, and for each addition, compute how much of its weight is newly covered.
This can be solved using a segment tree that maintains whether a segment is fully covered or not, and supports range updates and “sum of newly activated weights.” Each node stores the sum of hi in its segment if not fully covered, and once covered it becomes zero for future contributions. Lazy propagation is used to ensure updates remain efficient.
The sliding window is handled by scheduling removals: each query i activates interval subtree(xi) at time i, and deactivates it at time i + ki + 1. We process events in order, maintaining the active coverage structure.

Algorithm Walkthrough

However, instead of truly undoing, we rely on the fact that once a node is consumed, it never contributes again, so we only need to ensure correctness of active window logic for future activation decisions, which is handled via careful bookkeeping of coverage state.
- Use a queue to store active intervals, pushing each new interval and popping expired ones, ensuring only valid intervals contribute to coverage decisions.
Why it works:
The key invariant is that every node in the segment tree is either already paid for or not yet paid for, and once paid, it never becomes payable again. The segment tree ensures that whenever a new interval is applied, only previously unpaid nodes contribute to the answer. The sliding window structure ensures that at any time, the set of active intervals matches exactly the last ki queries, so no subtree is incorrectly considered remembered or forgotten.

Edge Cases
