The structure that saves us is that each node differs from its parent by only one edge update, and the entire system forms a rooted tree of versions. This suggests doing a traversal of this tree while maintaining a dynamic representation of the current graph.
A natural tool is a rollback DSU. If we only ever needed to add edges along a path and undo them when going back up the recursion, DSU rollback would work perfectly. However, deletions break this directly, because removing an edge is not necessarily undoing the most recent union operation. It may correspond to an older union, which cannot be selectively undone in a simple stack-based DSU.
The resolution is to avoid handling deletions “live”. Instead, we convert each edge’s activity into time intervals over the graph-version tree. Each edge is either active or inactive at each node. Because each node toggles exactly one edge relative to its parent, every edge’s presence over the tree forms a set of disjoint intervals.
Once we have intervals of “this edge is active for these graph nodes”, we can treat the problem as offline dynamic connectivity over a tree of versions. We use a segment tree over the index of graph nodes, assign each active interval of an edge into segment tree nodes, and run a divide-and-conquer traversal with a rollback DSU. Algorithm Walkthrough
