Instead, for any simple path between two nodes, we take all node values on that path, sort them in increasing order, assign ranks starting from 1, and then compute a weighted sum where each value is multiplied by its rank in that sorted order.
The contribution of a path depends only on the multiset of values along it, not on the direction we traverse the path. A single node path is valid, and its cost is simply 1 times its value.
The task is to compute this cost for every unordered pair of nodes, including single nodes, and sum everything modulo 1e9 + 7.
The constraints allow up to 5 × 10^5 nodes, which rules out any solution that enumerates all paths explicitly. The number of paths in a tree is O(n^2), since every pair of nodes defines exactly one simple path. Even writing down all paths would already be quadratic, and any per-path sorting would add a logarithmic factor, making brute force completely infeasible.
A naive approach would compute all paths, extract their node lists, sort each list, and compute contributions. Even if we optimized path extraction, we would still touch each pair of nodes, so the scale is fundamentally too large.
A subtle edge case is when values are extremely skewed. Since ranks depend on ordering inside each path, local comparisons matter, not global order. A node with a very large value may still receive rank 1 if it is the smallest on that particular path. This invalidates any approach that tries to precompute contributions per node independently of paths.
Approaches
A brute-force perspective starts from the definition. For every pair of nodes u and v, we consider the unique path between them, collect all values, sort them, and compute the weighted rank sum. This correctly follows the problem definition, but the cost per path is proportional to the path length, so in a chain-shaped tree we end up with about n^3 log n total operations in the worst case, since there are O(n^2) paths and each path may cost O(n log n). This is far beyond any feasible limit.
The key observation is that sorting within each path suggests a rank-based accumulation, which can be reinterpreted globally. Instead of thinking of paths individually, we reverse the perspective: fix a value and ask on how many paths it contributes with a given rank.
If we process nodes in increasing order of value, then for a fixed node, its rank on a path depends only on how many smaller-valued nodes are present on that path. This turns the problem into counting, for each node, how many paths have exactly k smaller nodes on them including that node.
This leads to a classic tree DP transformation: we root the tree arbitrarily and consider contributions in a bottom-up manner. When merging subtrees, we track how many nodes with smaller values exist in each subtree and how they combine across paths passing through a node. Each node acts as a pivot where paths from different child subtrees combine.
The central reduction is that each node’s contribution can be expressed as a function of how many pairs of nodes in different subtrees interact through it, weighted by how many smaller values lie along those combined paths. This avoids enumerating paths explicitly and replaces sorting per path with maintaining order via processing in increasing value order.

Algorithm Walkthrough
- Sort all nodes by their value in increasing order. This ensures that when we process a node, all previously processed nodes have smaller values and will always contribute as “lower rank” elements in any path structure involving the current node.
- Root the tree arbitrarily, typically at node 1, and prepare adjacency lists for traversal. Rooting is only to define parent-child structure for DP; the final answer is independent of root choice.
- For each node, maintain a DSU-on-tree style structure or a subtree size accumulation that tracks how many already-activated nodes exist in its subtree. “Activated” here means nodes whose values are strictly smaller than the current node in processing order.
- Process nodes in sorted order of value. When activating a node u, we conceptually insert it into the structure. At this moment, all previously activated nodes are exactly those with smaller values, so we can treat them as contributing potential rank increments for future nodes.
- For each activation of node u, compute how many previously activated nodes lie in each of its subtrees relative to its neighbors. This allows us to determine how many paths have u as the maximum-value endpoint or internal separator while counting how many smaller nodes lie on those paths.
- The contribution of node u is determined by counting all paths where u appears, multiplied by how many smaller nodes lie on the same path. Since ranks depend only on relative ordering, u’s position among larger values is fixed once smaller nodes are accounted for.
- Aggregate contributions modulo 1e9 + 7 as we process each node, ensuring that each path is counted exactly once through its highest-value endpoint perspective.
Why it works
The correctness rests on the fact that for any path, if we look at its maximum-valued node, all other nodes on the path are smaller and were activated before it in the processing order. That maximum node determines how ranks shift inside the sorted order: every smaller node contributes to increasing ranks of nodes larger than it, but this can be globally accounted for when the larger endpoint is processed. This avoids double counting because every path is uniquely assigned to its maximum-valued node.

Edge Cases
For a single node input like n = 1, the algorithm activates node 1, finds no children, and adds zero contribution from edges. The only valid path is (1,1), and its value is correctly handled implicitly as no pairwise combination occurs.
For a skewed chain, activation order ensures each node accumulates contributions only from already activated smaller nodes, so contributions flow in one direction along the chain. Even though subtree recomputation is inefficient, the correctness of counting paths through the maximum node remains valid.
