A brute force approach would treat every state as a node in a probabilistic graph and try to compute expected values by repeatedly relaxing transitions until convergence. The key observation is that despite the stochastic transitions, the system is acyclic in a carefully chosen direction. Stage index strictly increases on success, and health strictly decreases on failure. Mana changes but is bounded, and post-damage availability is also bounded. This means we can perform dynamic programming in reverse stage order, and within a stage, process health in increasing order so that all “failure transitions” already point to smaller health states that are known.
The probabilistic transition of a challenge attempt is the only place where expectation appears, but it does not create cyclic dependencies on the same state because failure always reduces health. This eliminates the need for iterative solvers and allows a direct DP formulation.

Algorithm Walkthrough
We define a DP state that represents the minimum expected remaining time to finish the game from a given configuration. The configuration includes current stage i, current health hp, current mana mp, and a boolean flag indicating whether the special post-damage heal is currently available.
- We process stages in reverse order starting from n down to 1. The reason is that a successful attempt always moves forward to i + 1, so future values must already be known.
- We define a base case for stage n + 1. Once we pass the last stage, the expected remaining time is zero regardless of resources, because the task is completed.
- Before computing any state at stage i, we apply the stage’s totem effect if it exists. This means that whenever we enter stage i, mana is immediately reset to full capacity. This reset is not optional and does not cost time, so every DP state at stage i assumes mp is already consistent with this rule.
- For each state, we evaluate three possible decisions: attempting the stage, focusing to restore health using mana, and using the post-damage heal if available.
- When considering an attempt, we always pay one unit of time immediately. After that, with probability pi, we move to stage i + 1 without changing health or mana. With probability 1 − pi, we stay at stage i but lose one health and unlock the post-damage heal for the next decision. The expected value is formed by combining these two outcomes.
- When considering focus, we check that mana is available. If so, we pay T1 time and increase health by one while decreasing mana by one. This transition is deterministic.
- When considering the post-damage heal, we can only use it if the flag is active. If allowed, we pay T2 time, increase health by one, and consume the flag so it cannot be reused until another damage event occurs.
- The DP value for each state is the minimum among all valid actions.
Why it works
Every transition either increases the stage index or decreases health, and neither operation ever cycles back to a previously unresolvable state.
