Second, consider disconnected “pockets” behind enemies. If a weak enemy is behind a strong one, you may need to return later after growing power elsewhere. A naive single-pass BFS would incorrectly assume those cells are permanently unreachable.
Third, exit transitions between levels can be misleading. Even if a level exit is reachable early, it may be suboptimal to take it immediately if stronger growth is still available in the current level.
Approaches
The brute-force interpretation is to treat this as a state graph where each state is (cell, current power). From each state, you can move to adjacent cells, and when encountering an enemy, transition only if the power constraint is satisfied, updating the power accordingly.
This is correct, but completely infeasible. The number of possible power values grows with every enemy defeated, and in the worst case each cell might be visited multiple times with different power states. That leads to an explosion in states, easily exceeding 1e9 conceptual transitions.
The key observation is that power is monotonically increasing. Once you reach a certain power, you never go back. This means we do not need to track multiple states per cell. Instead, we should always try to reach as many “currently defeatable” enemies as possible given current power, and repeatedly expand reachable space as power increases.
This naturally suggests a best-first traversal over the dungeon graph, but prioritized by enemy strength. If we maintain all reachable cells and always consume the weakest available enemy that we can currently defeat, we simulate the optimal growth process.
This transforms the problem into a single global process: expand reachable area, collect all accessible enemies, and always pick the next strongest reachable gain in a controlled way. A priority queue or multiset structure becomes the natural tool.

Algorithm Walkthrough
1. Model the dungeon as a graph over cells
We treat every non-blocked cell as a node in a graph, connected by 4-directional adjacency inside each level and vertical connections through exit cells. This converts movement into standard graph traversal.
2. Maintain a set of reachable cells
We start from the initial position with power 1 and perform a BFS/DFS to mark all cells that can be physically reached without considering enemies that are too strong. These represent the currently accessible frontier.
The reason this is safe is that movement constraints are independent of power, except when blocked by enemies.
3. Maintain a structure of “available enemies”
Among all reachable cells, we collect all enemy cells whose strength is less than or equal to current power. These represent actions we are allowed to take right now.
We store them in a min-heap keyed by enemy strength so we always process the weakest available enemy first. This ordering matters because it ensures we gradually expand power without skipping necessary intermediate steps.
4. Repeatedly extract and process enemies
While there exists at least one defeatable enemy, we repeatedly:
- Take the weakest enemy from the heap that we can currently defeat.
- Increase power by its value.
- From the position where this enemy was located, expand reachability again, because higher power may now unlock previously blocked regions.
Each time power increases, the reachable region can only expand, never shrink. This justifies re-running BFS from newly unlocked boundaries instead of recomputing globally.
5. Continue until no further progress is possible
Once the heap contains no enemy with strength ≤ current power, and no new reachable expansions reveal such enemies, the process stabilizes. The current power is the maximum achievable value.
Why it works
The invariant is that at every moment, we maintain exactly the set of cells reachable under current power, and among those cells we have identified all enemies that are currently feasible to defeat. Because power only increases when an enemy is defeated, any previously unreachable cell that becomes reachable will only appear after some power gain, and will never be missed due to re-expansion.
The greedy choice is safe because all future options depend only on increasing power. Defeating any reachable enemy is never harmful in terms of reachability; it strictly expands or preserves the reachable region. The priority ordering ensures we never skip a necessary small step that enables access to larger gains later.
