At first glance, it feels like a tree dynamic programming problem where each node chooses a value from a set of reachable values, and we enforce parent-child ordering constraints. That leads naturally to a DP state like “minimum cost for a subtree if this node has value v”. The transition would require, for each child, taking a minimum over all values not exceeding v. This quickly becomes expensive because both the number of nodes and the number of possible values are large.

The real simplification comes from separating two ideas that are usually entangled: the structure of allowed values and the tree constraint.

Each node can independently choose any subset of the update values. This means every node has the same base set of possible increments, only shifted by its initial value. Crucially, there is no coupling between nodes in how these subsets are chosen. The choice made for one vertex does not affect what another vertex can do.

Once we fix a value for a node, its children only need to satisfy a single constraint against that value. There is no interaction between siblings and no global budget. This removes the need for subtree DP entirely. Instead, the optimal strategy becomes greedy: assign each node the smallest value it can take that is still valid with respect to its parent.

So we precompute all subset sums of the update array once. Then for each node, its allowed values are its initial value plus any subset sum. During a traversal from the root, we maintain the minimum value each node must reach (its parent’s assigned value). Each node independently picks the smallest reachable value that is at least this threshold. If it cannot, the answer is impossible.

The key reason this works is that each node’s decision is independent once its parent’s value is fixed. The only constraint is monotonicity along edges, so locally minimizing each node’s value never restricts feasibility for descendants.

Why it works

The construction maintains a simple invariant: when we enter a node, the value passed from its parent is the smallest value this node is allowed to take while still respecting all constraints above it. Since every node’s feasible set depends only on its own subset-sum choices, choosing the minimum feasible value at each node cannot block any future choice in the subtree. There is no mechanism where a larger value at a node unlocks new options for descendants, so local minimization is globally optimal.

The solution begins by computing all reachable subset sums from the update values. This is the only place where the “multiple subset choices per node” complexity is handled, and it is done once globally.

We then root the tree and compute a parent relationship using an iterative traversal. This avoids recursion depth issues for n up to 100000.
