The system starts from an initial matrix. Then we process a sequence of updates, each producing a new version. Every update touches exactly one row and a contiguous segment of columns. The update is either a range addition or a range assignment. After applying it, we conceptually obtain a new matrix version. On top of that, we must answer queries asking for the minimum value of the derived column-sum array on a given interval.
The important difficulty is that versions are persistent. Every update is applied to a specified previous version and creates a new one. Queries also refer to arbitrary previous versions.
The constraints force us into logarithmic or near-logarithmic behavior per operation. The array size is large enough that any linear scan per query is impossible. The number of queries is moderate, but persistence multiplies structure, so copying full arrays or full segment trees per version is also impossible.
A naive approach would maintain the full matrix per version. Each update would copy a row segment, and each query would recompute all column sums and scan the range. Even if copying a row is linear in n, doing it q times leads to roughly 20,000 times 250,000 operations, which is already too large, and recomputing sums per query makes it completely infeasible.
A more subtle failure case appears if one tries to maintain only row segment trees but recompute column sums during each query by iterating over the range. Even with four rows, iterating over 250,000 elements per query quickly exceeds limits.
Approaches
The key observation is that the number of rows is tiny and fixed, while columns are large. Every query depends only on the per-column sum across at most four independent arrays. This suggests maintaining each row separately and combining them only when needed.
The brute-force idea is straightforward. For each version we explicitly store all rows. A type 1 or type 2 query modifies a range in one row and copies the affected array. A type 3 query recomputes all column sums and scans the requested interval. This works logically but costs O(n) per update and O(n) per query, which leads to roughly 5 billion operations in the worst case.
To remove the linear factor, we replace each row array with a segment tree that supports range assignment and range addition. Since versions are persistent, each update creates a new root while reusing unchanged parts. This ensures that each row update costs only logarithmic time and memory per modified path.
However, queries still require the minimum of column sums, and the sum itself depends on all rows. We therefore also maintain a segment tree for the derived array of column sums. The subtle part is that this second tree must stay consistent with all row updates without explicitly recomputing full columns.
This is possible because every update modifies exactly one row, and the derived value at a leaf column is just the sum of the k row values at that position. When a row is updated, we can recompute affected leaves implicitly through the segment tree structure, updating only the nodes that correspond to the modified segment. Since both the row tree and the sum tree share the same interval decomposition, we can propagate updates in parallel.

Algorithm Walkthrough
We maintain one persistent segment tree per row, and another persistent segment tree that stores the column-wise sums. Each version stores roots of all row trees and the root of the sum tree.
- Start by building four segment trees, one for each row of the initial matrix. Each leaf stores the value of that row at a column, and each internal node stores the minimum and sum over its segment.
- Also build a segment tree for the column sums. At each leaf, the value is the sum of the four row leaves at that position. Internal nodes store the minimum over their segment and the sum is not strictly needed for queries but is convenient for recomputation.
- For a type 1 or type 2 update on row p, we first create a new version of row p’s segment tree by applying a persistent range update. Only nodes on the update path are cloned.
- In parallel, we update the sum segment tree on the same segment. Since the sum is just the sum of all rows, changing one row by +x or assignment y modifies the column sum by the same operation applied to that row.
- For each affected segment node in the sum tree, we recompute its stored minimum from its children after the update propagates upward. Only O(log n) nodes are affected due to persistence.
- We store the new roots as the next version.
- For a type 3 query, we simply query the sum segment tree of the requested version on the interval [l, r], returning the minimum value stored.
The critical invariant is that for every version, every node in the sum segment tree correctly reflects the sum of the corresponding segments of all row trees. Because updates are applied consistently to both the row tree and the sum tree over identical segments, this relationship is preserved at every level.
