Algorithm Walkthrough
We convert time into a segment tree structure over the sequence of queries. Each rectangle activation corresponds to a time interval during which its cells are considered open. A cancellation closes the most recent interval, so we can pair them using a stack.
For each activation, we record the time segment during which it is active. Then we distribute these segments into a segment tree over time, so that each node contains the set of rectangles active throughout its interval.
We also maintain a disjoint set union over grid cells. Each cell is treated as a node, but we only activate it when it becomes open. When a cell becomes active, we connect it to its already active 4-neighbors. These union operations must be reversible, so we store history for rollback.
The traversal proceeds over the segment tree of time. At each node, we apply all rectangle effects corresponding to that interval, perform union operations for all newly activated cells and their adjacencies, and then recurse. When reaching a leaf corresponding to a query, we simply check whether the two queried cells belong to the same DSU component. After finishing a node, we roll back all DSU changes performed in that node before returning.
Why it works
At any segment tree node, the DSU represents exactly the connectivity induced by all rectangles fully active over that interval. Because every update is decomposed into disjoint time segments, each edge is applied only in the segments where it truly exists. The rollback mechanism guarantees that when we move between branches of the segment tree, we do not leak connectivity information across time intervals where it should not exist. This preserves the invariant that the DSU state matches exactly the active grid at that point in the DFS over time.
