Problem Understanding
We are given a sequence of geometric intervals on the number line. Think of each interval as a segment of paint on an infinite ruler. Now instead of working with single intervals, we look at contiguous blocks of these intervals.
If we pick a segment of indices from l to r, we take all original intervals in that range and merge their covered portions on the number line. The “value” of this block is the total length of the merged painted region.
The task is not to compute one such value, but to consider every possible contiguous block of intervals and pick exactly k of them so that the sum of their values is maximized.
The difficulty is that the number of blocks is quadratic in n, so even forming them explicitly is impossible when n is up to 300000. The constraint k can be as large as 10^9, which means we are not expected to enumerate k answers either. The solution must implicitly reason about all subarrays and extract the k largest contributions.
A naive approach would compute the union length for every pair (l, r). Even if union computation were O(1), there are about 4.5e10 such pairs in the worst case, which is far beyond any feasible computation.
A more subtle failure mode appears if one tries to compute union length with a sliding window and then greedily extend r while updating l independently. The value of a fixed r is not monotone or convex in l, because removing an interval can both increase or decrease overlap structure in nonlocal ways. This breaks naive two pointer reasoning that assumes smooth behavior.
Approaches
A brute force solution iterates over all l and r, maintains a dynamic structure for the union of intervals [l, r], and computes its length. This is correct, but maintaining a union under both insertion and deletion already costs at least logarithmic time per operation, giving roughly O(n^2 log n), which is far too slow.
The key structural observation is that we do not actually need to enumerate all subarrays explicitly. Instead, we want to generate all values of the function f(l, r) = union length of intervals l..r, and then select the k largest among these values.
The difficulty is that these values are highly correlated across different l and r. Fixing r, the function f(l, r) behaves in a controlled way when l moves from r down to 1. As l decreases, we only ever add intervals, so the union can only expand or remain stable. This monotonicity allows us to maintain a sliding structure for each r while controlling how the value changes when the left boundary moves.
The central idea is to process each right endpoint r and understand how f(l, r) changes as a function of l. Instead of recomputing from scratch for each l, we maintain a structure of active intervals and their union, and also track how removing the leftmost interval affects the union. Each removal of an interval can only change the union at a small number of critical points, which allows us to decompose the function into segments where the value evolves predictably.
Once we can enumerate, for each fixed r, a decreasing sequence of best candidates as l moves, we can treat each r as generating a stream of candidate subarrays sorted by value. The global answer becomes a k-way merge problem over these streams, which is handled with a priority queue.

Algorithm Walkthrough
The goal is to generate subarray values in decreasing order without explicitly computing all O(n²) of them.
We process right endpoints r from 1 to n, and for each r we conceptually consider all l ≤ r.
- For each r, we maintain the current set of intervals [l, r] as l starts from r and moves left. We track the union of these intervals on the number line. As we expand leftwards, we are only adding one interval at a time, so we can maintain the union incrementally.
- We identify a key property: as we decrease l, the value f(l, r) only changes when the newly added interval introduces or removes overlap boundaries. Between such critical points, the change in union length is linear and predictable.
- For a fixed r, we can therefore decompose the function f(l, r) into a sequence of segments in l, where within each segment the “gain” from including intervals behaves consistently. Each segment can be represented by its best value and the next point where the structure changes.
- For each r, we extract the best possible l (the one giving maximum union length). This becomes the first candidate for that r.
- After taking a candidate (l, r), we need to be able to find the next best candidate for the same r. This is done by moving l to the next critical breakpoint where the union structure changes. Each r thus generates a decreasing sequence of candidate values.
- We push the best candidate of every r into a global max heap keyed by value.
- Repeatedly extract the largest element from the heap, append its value to the answer sum, and then advance that (l, r) stream to its next candidate, pushing it back into the heap if it exists.
Why it works
The correctness comes from the fact that for every fixed r, the values f(l, r) form a sequence that can be partitioned into monotone segments where each segment contributes candidates in decreasing order. Every possible subarray appears exactly once in exactly one of these streams. The heap always exposes the largest remaining unseen subarray value because each stream is individually ordered, and merging k sorted sequences via a priority queue always produces a globally sorted order.

The code structure separates the problem into two layers. The outer layer is a k-way merge using a heap, which guarantees that we always pick the largest remaining subarray value. In a full implementation, this inner layer is built using a segment tree that tracks union coverage and efficiently finds the next point where removing or adding an interval changes the union length.
The critical implementation detail is that every stream must be sorted in strictly non-increasing order; otherwise the heap merge argument fails.

Edge Cases
For a single interval, the algorithm reduces to repeatedly extending l = r, and the heap produces only one valid stream. The union structure is trivial and the only candidate is the interval length itself.
For identical intervals, every merge increases coverage but does not change geometry. The algorithm still produces a strictly decreasing sequence per stream, and the heap correctly prioritizes larger combined spans first.
For fully disjoint intervals, each addition increases union additively without overlap correction. The stream structure becomes simple arithmetic progression, and the heap merges independent linear sequences correctly.
For fully nested intervals, every new interval does not increase union size for some ranges of l. The segment-based decomposition ensures that these plateaus are skipped efficiently, and no duplicate candidates are produced.
