Problem Understanding
We are given a growing sequence of numbers, where each number is between 0 and 255, so every value fits in 8 bits. After each update, we may be asked to start a two-player game from a given position in the sequence.
From a starting index k, a token sits on position k. Players alternate moves, starting with the first player. From a current position i, a move consists of jumping forward to some position j > i, but only if the values at those positions are very similar in the sense that their binary representations differ in at most one bit. In other words, the Hamming distance between Ai and Aj is at most 1.
A player who cannot move loses immediately. For each query, we must determine whether the first player wins under optimal play.
The sequence is not static. New elements are appended over time, and queries can be interleaved with these appends, so the game graph is being revealed incrementally from left to right.
The constraints are large: up to 200000 operations. Each operation must be handled close to constant or logarithmic time. Any solution that recomputes reachability or game outcomes from scratch per query is immediately too slow, since even a linear scan per query would already reach 4e10 operations in the worst case.
A subtle point is that each value is only 8 bits. This makes the compatibility relation extremely small and structured, which is the main reason the problem becomes tractable.
A few edge cases clarify the rules.
If all values are distinct and far apart in bit space, then no moves exist at all and every starting position is losing. For example, for sequence [0, 255] and start at position 1, there is no valid j > 1, so the first player loses.
If values repeat, moves can chain forward even through identical values, since identical numbers differ by zero bits and are always compatible.
The main difficulty is that the graph is not known in advance and is built online, so we cannot precompute global DP in one pass.
Approaches
If the sequence were fixed, the problem reduces to a standard game on a directed acyclic graph: each position is a node, edges go forward to compatible values, and we compute whether each node is winning or losing using backward dynamic programming.
From the rightmost position backward, a position i is winning if there exists a reachable j > i such that j is losing. This works because all edges point forward.
The brute force version would, for every position i, scan all j > i and check compatibility and DP status. That leads to O(n^2) transitions, which is far too slow for 200000 elements.
The difficulty increases because the sequence is dynamic. After each append, we are effectively inserting a new node into the DAG, which can change the DP state of earlier nodes. A direct recomputation after every insertion is impossible.
The key structural observation is that DP states only move in one direction. When we add a new node, existing nodes can only switch from losing to winning, never the reverse. This happens because adding a new node can only add more options; it never removes existing moves.
This monotonicity allows an incremental process. We maintain the set of currently losing positions. When a new position is appended, it starts as losing because it has no outgoing edges. Then it may “activate” earlier nodes: any earlier node that can jump to this new position becomes winning immediately.
The remaining task is to efficiently find all earlier positions that can reach the newly appended node under the compatibility rule.
Since values are only 0 to 255, each value has at most 9 compatible values including itself (flip each of 8 bits plus identity). We can therefore maintain, for each value, a structure storing all currently losing positions having that value. When a new losing node is added, we only need to check these 9 value buckets and activate all earlier indices in them.
Each index can be activated at most once, so the total work over the whole process is linear up to logarithmic factors from ordered structures.

Algorithm Walkthrough
We maintain the following state as the sequence grows: a DP array where dp[i] indicates whether position i is winning, and for each value v we maintain a balanced set of indices i such that Ai = v and dp[i] is currently losing.
We also precompute, for each value x, the list of values reachable from x by flipping at most one bit. This adjacency list has size at most 9.
We process operations in order.
- When we append a new value x at position i, we initially set dp[i] = false because there are no moves from the last element. We insert i into the bucket corresponding to value x.
- For this new position i, we consider all values y in the adjacency list of x. For each such y, we look at the set of indices with value y that are still losing.
- From each such set, we extract all indices j < i. Every such j now has a new winning move to i, so dp[j] becomes true. Once an index becomes winning, it is removed permanently from its value bucket.
- We do not need to propagate further from j. Even though j changes state, it only changes from losing to winning, which can only remove it from the losing set and cannot invalidate any previously discovered winning transitions.
- When we receive a query starting at position k, we output “Grammy” if dp[k] is true, otherwise “Alice”.
Why it works comes from tracking losing positions as a dynamic frontier. A position is winning exactly when it can reach at least one losing node in the suffix. The sets we maintain always represent the current suffix of losing nodes, and every time a new losing node appears, it is immediately used to convert all reachable earlier nodes into winning nodes. Since no node ever returns to losing, every node is processed at most once, so the propagation remains correct and finite.

The code maintains DP states incrementally. Each time a new index is appended, it is inserted into its value bucket as a losing position. Then every compatible value bucket is scanned for earlier losing positions, which are then flipped to winning and removed.
The critical detail is that removal is permanent. Once a position is marked winning, it never re-enters any structure, which guarantees that the total number of processed indices is linear over the entire run.
The query step is direct: it simply reads dp[k].

A first edge case is when all values are identical. Every new position immediately connects to all previous ones because identical values differ by zero bits. The algorithm handles this by placing every index into the same value bucket. When a new node is appended, it activates all earlier indices in one sweep, flipping the entire prefix to winning step by step in correct order.
Another edge case is when values alternate between highly connected patterns, such as 0 and 255. Even though each value is extreme, their compatibility is limited, and the structure prevents large cascades. The bucket-based activation ensures only valid neighbors are considered.
