The internal order of boxes is preserved implicitly because they remain distinct, so the $i$-th box in the segment must end up at a specific relative offset inside the chosen block.
The task is to compute the minimum total weighted movement cost for each query, while also supporting updates that change a box’s weight.
The key difficulty is that each query asks for an optimal alignment cost over a subarray under weights that change dynamically. With up to $2 \cdot 10^5$ elements and queries, any solution that recomputes costs naively per query will not scale. Even $O(n)$ per query already leads to $O(nq)$, which is far beyond limits.
A second subtlety is that the cost is not symmetric in a simple way over positions $a_i$. The optimal alignment depends on a weighted median structure hidden inside the problem, and ignoring this leads to incorrect greedy shifts.
A common failure case arises if one tries to always align to the arithmetic mean of positions. For example, with two points at positions 0 and 100 with weights 1 and 100, the mean is misleading, while the optimal alignment is driven almost entirely by the heavy point. Any mean-based strategy produces incorrect costs.
Another subtle pitfall is assuming that optimal placement depends only on endpoints of the segment. That breaks immediately when weights are unevenly distributed.
Approaches
A direct brute force approach for a query $[l, r]$ would try every possible target segment position $x$, compute the cost of moving each box to $x + (i-l)$, and take the minimum. Each evaluation costs $O(r-l)$, and there are $O(n)$ possible positions for $x$, giving $O(n^2)$ per query in the worst case. With $2 \cdot 10^5$ queries, this is completely infeasible.
The structural breakthrough comes from rewriting the movement cost in terms of relative positions. If we define transformed coordinates
$$b_i = a_i - i,$$
then when we place segment $[l, r]$ starting at position $x$, the cost becomes
$$\sum w_i \cdot |b_i - (x-l)|.$$
This turns the problem into a classical weighted absolute deviation minimization: choose a value $t$ to minimize $\sum w_i |b_i - t|$. The optimal $t$ is a weighted median of the $b_i$ values in the segment.
So each query reduces to two tasks: find the weighted median of ${b_l, \dots, b_r}$ under weights $w$, and compute the weighted absolute deviation from that median. The difficulty is that weights are updated and queries are on arbitrary subarrays, so we need a data structure that supports range weighted statistics over values that are not sorted by index.
A merge sort tree over indices resolves this. Each segment tree node stores the list of $b_i$ sorted, along with prefix sums of weights and prefix sums of $w_i \cdot b_i$. This allows us, for any node, to quickly compute how much weight lies below a threshold $t$, and the corresponding contribution sums.
To find the weighted median for a query range, we binary search over candidate $b$-values and use the segment tree to count total weight on the left side. Once the median is found, the same prefix information gives the cost in logarithmic time per node.

Algorithm Walkthrough
We treat each box $i$ as a point with coordinate $b_i = a_i - i$ and dynamic weight $w_i$.
- Build a segment tree over indices $1 \dots n$, where each node stores all $b_i$ values in its interval sorted increasingly. Alongside, store prefix sums of weights and prefix sums of $w_i \cdot b_i$. This allows fast aggregate queries inside any node.
- To answer a query $[l, r]$, we conceptually need the weighted median of all $b_i$ in that range. We do not explicitly merge lists; instead we search over the value space of $b$.
- We collect a global sorted list of all $b_i$ values. This becomes the search space for the median.
- We binary search on this sorted value list. For a candidate value $t$, we compute total weight of all elements in $[l, r]$ with $b_i \le t$. This is done by decomposing $[l, r]$ into segment tree nodes and, inside each node, using binary search plus prefix sums.
- If the weight on the left side is at least half of the total weight of the segment, then $t$ is to the right of or equal to the weighted median; otherwise we move rightward in the search space.
- Once the weighted median $t^*$ is found, we compute the cost:

Why it works
The transformation $b_i = a_i - i$ isolates the relative distortion caused by shifting into a contiguous segment. Any valid final configuration corresponds to choosing a single shift $t$, and the cost becomes a weighted $L_1$ distance in one dimension. The weighted median property guarantees optimality because moving the target $t$ across any point balances exactly when cumulative weight crosses half the total, ensuring no local shift can reduce total absolute deviation. The segment tree maintains these weighted distributions exactly over any index range, so every query operates on the correct multiset without recomputing from scratch.
