and we want to maximize this value.
The key structural constraint is that we are not allowed to reorder elements, only skip them. This turns the problem into choosing which “links” between consecutive chosen elements we want to keep.
The constraints are extremely large, with $n$ up to $10^6$ and values up to $10^{12}$. This immediately rules out any quadratic or even $n \log n$ per element DP that depends on all previous states. The solution must be close to linear or linear with small constant factor per element.
A subtle edge case is when skipping improves AND contributions indirectly. For example, if we have:
f = [8, 7, 7, 8]
Choosing all elements gives:
8&7 + 7&7 + 7&8 = 0 + 7 + 0 = 7
But selecting only [7, 7] gives:
7&7 = 7
and selecting [8, 8] gives 8. The optimal subsequence is not necessarily the full array, and also not necessarily greedy adjacent pairing in the original array.
Another important case is when all values are zero except sparse high bits. For instance:

Every adjacent AND is zero, so any subsequence of length at least 2 has score 0. The answer is 0, but naive intuition might incorrectly try to “connect” distant bits.
These examples show that adjacency in the original array is irrelevant after selection, except that order is preserved. The real decision is how to partition the sequence into consecutive chosen elements.
Approaches
A brute-force approach would enumerate every valid subsequence, compute its score, and track the maximum. Each subsequence of length $k$ costs $O(k)$ to evaluate, and there are $2^n$ subsequences. Even restricting to length at least two, this is still exponential and immediately infeasible for $n = 10^6$.
A more structured DP tries to maintain, for each position, the best score of a subsequence ending here. Let dp[i] be the best score of a valid subsequence ending at i. Then for every previous j < i, we could transition:
$$dp[i] = \max(dp[j] + (f[j] & f[i]))$$
This is correct but requires $O(n^2)$ transitions.
The key observation is that the value of a transition depends only on the bitwise structure of f[i]. Instead of considering all previous indices, we can compress the information they provide into bitwise summaries.
For each bit position, we maintain the best DP value among previous elements that have that bit set. When processing a new value x, its contribution from a previous element depends only on which bits are shared, because:
$$f[j] & x$$
is exactly the sum of bits that are 1 in both numbers.
So instead of iterating over all j, we iterate over bits of x. For each set bit b in x, we try to extend using the best previous DP state among numbers that also contain bit b. This reduces transitions from $O(n)$ per state to $O(\log A)$.
We also need to allow starting a new subsequence, so each element can either start a fresh chain or extend an existing one.
This turns the problem into maintaining a small per-bit best value and updating it as we scan.

Algorithm Walkthrough
We process the array from left to right while maintaining two structures: the best subsequence score ending at each bit context, and the global best answer so far.
- For each element $x$, compute a candidate value representing starting a new subsequence at $x$. At minimum this is 0 because a subsequence must have at least two elements, so we do not finalize single elements as answers.
- For each bit $b$ such that $x$ has bit $b$ set, we look at the best known DP state associated with bit $b$. This represents the best subsequence ending in some earlier element that shares this bit.
- We compute a candidate transition value by adding $x & y$, but since we are iterating per bit, the contribution is naturally captured by aggregating over shared bits.
- We update the best subsequence ending at $x$ using the maximum among all these transitions.
- We update global answer with the best completed subsequence ending at $x$, ensuring it has at least one previous element.
The essential idea is that every subsequence ending at x is determined by its previous chosen element, and that previous element only matters through the bitwise intersection with x.
Why it works
The algorithm maintains the invariant that for every bit position, we know the best achievable subsequence score ending at some previous index that contains this bit. Any optimal subsequence ending at i must come from some last chosen element j, and the value contributed by j to i depends only on the bits they share. Therefore, restricting candidates to per-bit best states does not discard any optimal transition. Every optimal last step is represented in at least one of the bit buckets corresponding to a shared bit, so it is always considered.

For each new number x, we compute the best subsequence ending at x by trying all bits it contains and extending from the corresponding best states.
The subtle point is that we only transition through shared bits. The contribution (1 << b) represents the maximum possible contribution from bit b in the AND operation. Since AND only keeps bits that exist in both numbers, decomposing the transition per bit is safe.
We also ensure correctness by updating best_bit only after computing best_here, so we do not reuse the same element twice.
