Algorithm Walkthrough

We root the tree at an arbitrary vertex, say 1, and treat edges as parent-child relationships for preprocessing.

  1. Run a DFS from node 1 to compute, for every node, the minimum and maximum label in its subtree. This gives us a view of what each node controls in its downward direction. The reason this works is that in a rooted tree, every node’s subtree is disjoint from others, so min and max can be accumulated cleanly.
