Why it works
For a fixed a and b, a box is satisfied unless it is simultaneously not hit by x = a and not hit by y = b. Any such unsatisfied box forces c to lie inside its z-interval. Therefore the feasibility condition reduces exactly to the intersection of required z-intervals being non-empty.
