The goal is to complete exactly the required number of servings for every dish while minimizing the total cost of all chosen pairs. If it is impossible to exactly match all required counts, we must report that.
The important modeling step is to stop thinking in terms of days and instead think in terms of pairing demands. Each dish contributes a number of “stubs” equal to its required count, and each day connects two stubs, either within the same dish or across two dishes. The cost depends on how we pair these stubs.
The constraints are very small on the number of dishes, at most ten. That immediately rules out any exponential dependence on the counts of dishes themselves, but allows exponential dependence on subsets or bitmasks of dishes. Approaches
A brute-force interpretation treats each required serving as a separate item, giving up to 500 stubs total. We would then try to pair them arbitrarily, computing cost for each perfect matching. The number of perfect matchings grows factorially, roughly on the order of (500)! / (250! 2^250), which is completely infeasible.
Even if we compress by dish, we still need to decide how many self-pairs each dish uses and how many cross pairs occur between every pair of dishes. That introduces a multi-dimensional integer flow problem. A direct search over all such allocations becomes exponential in n and in the counts.
The key observation is that n is tiny, so we can treat the process as building pairings incrementally over subsets of dishes. We only care about how many stubs remain unpaired inside a subset of dishes, and we can encode transitions by choosing how a new dish connects to an already processed subset. This leads naturally to a bitmask dynamic programming where the state represents a subset of dishes whose internal pairing structure is being finalized, and transitions assign the next dish’s stubs either internally or to previous ones.
The structure becomes manageable because every dish has a bounded number of stubs, and each stub can either be paired within its group or matched to exactly one other group. This transforms the problem into distributing connections across subsets with cost aggregation from the matrix.

- We process dishes one by one, maintaining a DP over subsets of dishes that have already been “finalized” in terms of how their remaining demands interact with earlier dishes.
- For a fixed subset mask, we maintain a cost representing the minimum cost to satisfy all pairing requirements among dishes in that subset, while keeping track of how many unpaired stubs remain to be matched with future dishes.
- When we introduce a new dish i, we decide how many of its a[i] stubs are paired internally within the current subset and how many are paired with each previously considered dish. Every such decision contributes cost proportional to c[i][j] for each cross-pair.
- Internal pairing of a single dish is handled by deciding how many self-pairs it forms. Each self-pair consumes two units of demand and costs c[i][i]. If a[i] is odd after using self-pairs, that configuration is invalid.
- Transitions distribute remaining stubs of the new dish across already processed subsets. For each previous dish j, we decide how many connections are formed between i and j, ensuring consistency with remaining capacity of j.
- After processing all dishes, we check whether all stubs are perfectly matched. If any leftover demand remains, the configuration is invalid.
Why it works
At every step, the DP state fully captures the only information that affects future decisions: how many unmatched stubs remain in the processed subset and their implicit pairing cost so far. Any pairing decision involving a new dish depends only on how it connects to existing stubs, not on the internal structure of previous pairings. This makes earlier pairing choices interchangeable as long as the residual degree constraints are respected, which is exactly what the DP encodes.
