This is exactly the setting where a segment tree (or any range maximum data structure) removes repeated scanning. Instead of recomputing maxima for every index, we maintain a structure that supports querying the maximum value in a range and updating single positions efficiently.

Why it works
At the moment we compute $f(i)$, all positions in its dependency range have already been fixed and inserted into the segment tree. This establishes an invariant: before processing index $i$, the tree contains the correct final values for all indices $j > i$. Since every transition strictly increases index, there are no cycles, so no future step will modify these values. Each query therefore reads final values, not intermediate approximations, making the recurrence exact.
