Problem Understanding
We are given a connected graph with two types of edges. One set is already fixed by a competitor, each with a known cost. The second set is ours: these edges form a forest, and we are allowed to assign any integer weights to them.
After assigning weights, the customer will compute a minimum spanning tree of the entire graph. Among all possible MSTs, they prefer one that uses as many of our edges as possible.
Our goal is to choose weights so that every one of our edges appears in the chosen MST, and the total sum of our assigned weights is as large as possible. If we can push the total arbitrarily high while still forcing all our edges into the MST, we must report that the answer is unbounded.
The constraints force us into a near-linear or log-linear solution. With up to 500,000 nodes and edges, any approach that tries to recompute MSTs or simulate weight tuning per edge will fail. Even a single MST computation is fine, but anything quadratic over edges is impossible.
The key difficulty is that our edges are not arbitrary: they form a forest. This already suggests a tree-structure dependency where each of our edges must “compete” against competitor edges on some cut in the graph.
A subtle edge case appears when one of our edges is not actually necessary for connectivity in the full graph after considering competitor edges. If an edge lies on a cycle formed only by competitor edges, we might try to raise its weight indefinitely. But if that cycle contains no competitor edge that blocks it, we may get an unbounded solution.
Another important edge case is when a competitor edge is the unique minimum edge crossing a cut, making it impossible for us to include our edge without violating MST optimality.
Approaches
A direct but hopeless idea is to treat each of our edges independently and try to assign it a weight so that it always survives Kruskal’s algorithm. One might imagine fixing a large weight and checking whether MST still includes all our edges, but each check requires running an MST over up to 10^6 edges, and doing this for k edges leads to an explosion.
The correct way to view the problem is through Kruskal’s algorithm and cycle constraints. An edge is excluded from an MST exactly when there exists a cycle where it is the maximum-weight edge. Therefore, to force our edges into the MST, each of our edges must not be the heaviest edge on any cycle it participates in.
Since our edges form a forest, each of them connects two components that are otherwise connected only through competitor edges. For a given our edge, consider the path between its endpoints using only competitor edges. That path is unique in the MST-like structure induced by competitor edges. Any competitor edge on this path forms a fundamental cycle together with our edge.
For our edge to be included, its weight must be strictly smaller than the maximum competitor edge weight on that path. This transforms the problem into assigning weights under upper bounds induced by competitor-only paths.
Now the global coupling appears: different our edges may share competitor edges on their paths. We must assign weights to maximize their sum while respecting all constraints. This becomes a tree DP problem over the forest of our edges, but we must evaluate constraints induced by maximum edge weights on competitor paths.
The unbounded case appears when there is no competitor edge on a path between two nodes connected by our edges. Then no constraint limits the weight, so it can be increased infinitely while still staying in the MST.
The solution reduces to building a structure where we can query maximum edge weight on paths in the competitor graph, then enforce constraints on each of our edges, and finally compute the optimal assignment consistent with these bounds. DSU or LCA over a Kruskal tree construction is the standard tool.

Algorithm Walkthrough
We construct the classical Kruskal merge tree for the competitor edges. This structure allows us to answer maximum-edge-on-path queries via LCA.
- Sort competitor edges by weight and process them in increasing order using a DSU. Each time we merge two components, we create a new node in a merge tree whose children are the two DSU roots. The weight stored at this node is the edge weight that caused the merge.
This tree represents how connectivity evolves under Kruskal’s algorithm. 2. For every node, compute binary lifting parents and the maximum edge weight from it to each ancestor. This enables us to query the maximum edge weight on the path between any two original vertices. 3. For each of our edges connecting u and v, we compute the maximum competitor edge weight along the path between u and v in the Kruskal tree. Call this value wmax.
If u and v are already in the same DSU component before any competitor edge is added, then there is no competitor edge on their path. This means there is no upper bound on our edge weight, so the answer is unbounded. 4. Otherwise, the constraint for our edge is that its weight must be strictly less than wmax. To maximize profit, we set it to wmax − 1. 5. Sum all assigned weights. This produces the maximum feasible total profit. 6. Return -1 if any edge is unbounded.
The key idea is that each our edge is constrained only by the strongest competitor edge on the unique competitor-only path between its endpoints in the Kruskal tree, and these constraints are independent once the tree is built.
Why it works: in Kruskal’s MST construction, any edge that connects two already-connected components creates a cycle, and the heaviest edge on that cycle is the only candidate for removal. Our edge survives exactly when it is not the maximum on that cycle. The Kruskal tree encodes all such cycles hierarchically, so maximum-edge queries precisely capture feasibility bounds.
