First, no two vertices inside $Q$ are allowed to be connected by a direct edge in either direction. In other words, if we pick two vertices, there must be no arrow between them in the graph.

Second, every vertex outside $Q$ must be “close” to $Q$. More precisely, for every vertex not chosen, there must exist at least one vertex in $Q$ that can reach it in at most two directed steps. A vertex can be reached in two steps either directly by an edge, or through exactly one intermediate vertex.

The graph is sparse only in the sense of edge count, not structure. With up to one million edges, any solution that tries to reason about all pairs of vertices or explicitly compute reachability between all pairs will fail immediately. Even anything quadratic in $n$ is completely impossible. The only viable strategies are linear or near-linear in both vertices and edges.

A subtle point is that the second condition is asymmetric: we are not requiring mutual reachability, only that each outside vertex is covered by some vertex in $Q$ via a path of length at most two. This is a covering constraint rather than a connectivity constraint, which is what makes the problem constructive instead of purely graph-theoretic.

Edge cases that expose naive reasoning are easy to construct.

If the graph has a single vertex, any set $Q$ must either be empty or contain that vertex. The second condition becomes vacuous, but the independence condition restricts nothing. A naive approach that assumes at least one outgoing edge per vertex might incorrectly reject this.

If the graph is a directed chain like $1 \to 2 \to 3 \to 4$, picking every alternate vertex is tempting but not always correct under the two-step reachability constraint, because coverage depends on outgoing structure, not spacing.

The hardest failure mode comes from ignoring the “at most two moves” condition and treating it like a standard dominating set. A vertex may be covered via a length-two path even if it is not directly adjacent to any selected vertex, so greedy adjacency-based constructions can underestimate coverage.

Approaches

A brute-force strategy would attempt to construct subsets $Q$ and verify both conditions directly. One could imagine trying all subsets or iteratively adding vertices while checking validity. Even checking a single candidate subset requires verifying that every vertex outside is reachable within two steps from some chosen vertex, which in itself costs $O(n + m)$ if done with BFS from each chosen vertex. In the worst case, this degenerates into $O(n^2)$ or worse behavior.

The key observation is that the constraint is local in a very specific sense: if a vertex has no incoming edges, then it cannot be covered by any other vertex in one step. Similarly, if it is not reachable in two steps from any other vertex, it forces itself into the set $Q$. This immediately suggests that vertices with “small incoming neighborhood structure” must be included, because otherwise they cannot be dominated in the required radius.

The constructive idea is to process vertices in a way that ensures every vertex is either chosen or already covered by a chosen vertex. Once a vertex is chosen, all vertices reachable from it in one or two steps become covered and can be ignored for future selection. This naturally leads to a greedy marking process on reverse adjacency information.

We maintain a state indicating whether a vertex is already covered. We scan vertices in any order, and whenever we encounter an uncovered vertex, we select it into $Q$ and mark all vertices reachable from it within two steps as covered. Since the graph is directed, these are exactly its outgoing neighbors and their outgoing neighbors.

This works because once a vertex is chosen, it invalidates all vertices it can cover, preventing redundant selections and guaranteeing coverage propagation. The independence condition holds because we never select a vertex that is already reachable from a previously selected vertex in one step: such vertices would already have been marked covered.

Algorithm Walkthrough

We build adjacency lists for outgoing edges and maintain a boolean array used marking whether a vertex is already covered by the set $Q$.

  1. Initialize used[v] = False for all vertices and an empty list Q. We also store adjacency lists g[v] for all outgoing edges.
  2. Iterate through vertices from 1 to $n$. The order is arbitrary; any fixed traversal works because we always maintain coverage consistency.
  3. If the current vertex v is already marked as used, skip it since it is already reachable within two steps from some previously selected vertex.
  4. If v is not used, add it to the answer set Q. This is a greedy commitment: we ensure this vertex itself will serve as a covering source.
  5. Mark v as used. Then mark all vertices reachable from v in one step, i.e. all g[v][i], as used.
  6. For each such neighbor u, also mark all vertices reachable from u as used. This expands coverage to two steps.
  7. Continue until all vertices are processed.

The key idea in steps 5 and 6 is that once we pick a vertex, we immediately eliminate everything it can cover within the allowed radius, so no future selection will redundantly pick inside its coverage region.

Why it works

Each time we pick a vertex $v$, every vertex reachable from $v$ within two steps becomes covered. This ensures that no later iteration will pick any vertex already dominated by $v$. Therefore, no two chosen vertices can be connected by an edge, since an endpoint of any such edge would have been marked as covered when the other endpoint was chosen.

At the same time, if a vertex is ever left uncovered at the moment we scan it, it means no previously chosen vertex can reach it in one or two steps. Selecting it is therefore necessary to satisfy the coverage requirement for that vertex. This guarantees that every vertex not in $Q$ must lie within a two-step outgoing neighborhood of some vertex in $Q$.

The process builds a maximal set under the constraint that every newly added vertex removes its entire two-step forward neighborhood from future consideration, which enforces both independence and coverage simultaneously.

The adjacency list stores outgoing edges so that two-step reachability can be computed locally without any global BFS. The used array serves both as a coverage marker and as a pruning mechanism to prevent redundant processing.

The nested loop structure directly reflects the two-step reachability requirement. We do not need to store distances or run BFS because the graph depth we care about is fixed at two, which makes explicit expansion optimal.

Care must be taken to avoid revisiting already marked nodes, especially in dense graphs where repeated marking could otherwise increase constant factors significantly.
