A naive DFS-based simulation would also fail because subtree resets interact with previous color states in a way that invalidates recomputation.

A subtle edge case appears when repeated operation one is called on an already fully black subtree. For example, if we have a chain 1 → 2 → 3, and all are black, then applying operation one at node 1 will keep pushing the operation down until it reaches a leaf or runs out of children. Approaches

This works correctly, but the cost is the problem. In the worst case, a single operation one may traverse a long chain or even many branches, and operation two may touch all nodes in a large subtree. With 100,000 queries, this leads to worst-case behavior on the order of 10¹⁰ operations, which is far beyond the limit.

The key observation is that we need a structure that supports two ideas efficiently. First, we need to support “activate a node, or if already active, push activation downward.” Second, we need to support subtree resets that invalidate previous activations quickly.

This combination strongly suggests an Euler tour representation of the tree combined with a data structure that supports range assignment and point queries. However, operation one is not a standard update because it conditionally descends based on current state.

The crucial insight is to treat black nodes as a dynamic set and maintain, for each node, the ability to quickly find the next white node in its subtree path when we attempt to activate it. This is naturally handled using a segment tree over Euler order that tracks whether a node is currently white or black, with support for range assignment to white and point updates to black.

To handle the “push to children” behavior efficiently, we observe that we do not need to explicitly traverse all children. Instead, we repeatedly locate the first white node in a subtree when trying to activate a black node. This can be supported by maintaining a segment tree that stores whether a node is white, and supports finding a node with value 1 in a range.

Algorithm Walkthrough

We root the tree and compute an Euler tour so that each subtree corresponds to a contiguous segment.

Find any white node in the subtree rooted at v. If none exists, stop.

The reason we search for white nodes instead of walking children is that the rule “if black, go to children” effectively means we skip already-activated nodes and continue deeper until we find a valid candidate. 6. Why it works

Once a node is marked black, it will never be returned again until a subtree reset restores it to white. This matches exactly the semantics of repeated descent: each black node is permanently bypassed, and we only settle on nodes that are still white at the time of processing.
