Two special nodes matter more than all others: city 1 and city n. The baseline quantity is the shortest path distance between these two nodes in the tree.

We are allowed to add exactly one extra road per query. Each query provides only the length of that new road, but we are free to choose which two distinct cities to connect, as long as they were not already directly connected by an edge. After adding that road, the tree becomes a single cycle-containing graph, and the shortest path between 1 and n may decrease if the shortcut helps.

For each query, we must choose the endpoints of the added edge so that the resulting shortest distance between 1 and n is as large as possible. In other words, we are trying to “damage” the improvement as much as possible by placing the shortcut in the least useful location.

The constraints are large: up to 300,000 nodes and 300,000 queries. Any solution that recomputes distances per query or considers all pairs of nodes is immediately impossible. A quadratic or even $O(n \log n)$ per query approach is too slow.

A subtle edge case appears when the best “useless” edge is not obviously far from the 1-n path. For example, if all shortest path branches are shallow, connecting leaves might still create a detour that interacts with the main path through LCA structure. Approaches

A naive idea is to try every possible pair of nodes $u, v$ for each query. For each pair, we imagine adding an edge of length $x$, recompute the shortest path between 1 and n, and take the maximum result. Even if distances were precomputed, the effect of adding one edge changes the tree structure, so shortest paths must be recomputed or at least reconsidered per pair. This leads to roughly $O(n^2)$ candidates per query, and even with clever preprocessing, recomputing effects per candidate is far beyond feasible limits.

The key observation is that adding one edge only ever creates one meaningful alternative route between 1 and n: either the original path in the tree remains optimal, or a path that uses the new edge once becomes optimal. Any such new path decomposes into distances of the form $dist(1, u) + x + dist(v, n)$, or the symmetric version swapping $u$ and $v$.

Thus, for a fixed query value $x$, the best we can do is choose two nodes $u, v$ that maximize the resulting shortest path. The only structure that matters is how distances from 1 and from n behave across the tree.

Let us define two arrays: $d_1[v]$ is the distance from node 1 to $v$, and $d_n[v]$ is the distance from node n to $v$. These can be computed with two DFS traversals.

Now observe what happens if we add an edge $(u, v)$. The only candidate improvement path is:

but this is not correct because we are maximizing the final answer, not minimizing it.

The correct viewpoint is to think of the new path competing against the old diameter-like constraint. The optimal choice is to pick $u$ maximizing $d_1[u]$ and $v$ maximizing $d_n[v]$, because this maximizes the cost of using the new edge in a useful way. However, if both endpoints lie on the original 1-n path, the shortcut becomes too effective, so the best “destructive” placement is to push endpoints away from forming a good bridge.

A more robust reformulation comes from considering that the shortest path after adding the edge is:

The core reason this works is that all shortest-path improvements introduced by a single extra edge can be decomposed into two independent distance contributions from the endpoints to the fixed terminals 1 and n. The only global interaction is captured by the maximum separation of these contributions across the tree, which collapses to the single threshold $T$.
