Problem Understanding

However, each edge contributes to the cost proportional to how many times it is used, while each vertex contributes its value only once, regardless of how many times it is visited.

For each query, we fix two endpoints and want to choose any valid walk between them, respecting the “each edge at most twice” rule, that maximizes the total vertex reward minus total edge cost. Because revisiting vertices does not increase reward, the only reason to detour is to potentially gain access to other high-value vertices, even if that requires paying edge costs multiple times.

The constraints are large: up to 300,000 vertices and 400,000 queries. This immediately rules out any solution that recomputes a best walk per query or explores paths explicitly. Even a linear scan per query is too slow, so the solution must reduce each query to a small number of operations after preprocessing, ideally logarithmic.

A subtle edge behavior arises when detours are beneficial. For example, if a subtree contains high vertex values but is attached via an expensive edge, a naive shortest-path style intuition fails because we are not minimizing distance, we are maximizing a global reward with reuse allowed. Another pitfall is assuming the optimal path is always the simple path between endpoints; this is false because revisiting edges up to twice enables detours that can be revisited and reconnected.

Approaches

A brute-force interpretation would attempt to generate all valid 2-paths between two nodes and evaluate their profit. Even restricting attention to “simple structure plus detours,” the number of possible walks explodes because each edge may or may not be used twice, and revisits create combinatorial branching. Even if we restrict ourselves to enumerating simple paths plus optional subtree excursions, each query would still require traversing large portions of the tree, leading to O(n) or worse per query.

The key structural observation is that the underlying object is still a tree, so every pair of nodes has a unique simple path. Any valid walk that starts at u and ends at v can be seen as that unique path, plus a collection of detours that start from some nodes on the path, go into a subtree, and return back along the same edges. Each such detour contributes vertex values from a subtree but pays twice the edge costs along the detour boundary.

This turns the problem into a tree DP aggregation problem: for every edge direction, we want to know the best “gain” obtainable by entering a subtree and coming back. Once we know how profitable it is to deviate from a node into each child subtree, the optimal walk between two endpoints becomes a path problem on a transformed structure where each node carries a “best subtree gain” contribution.

The standard reduction is to compute, for each node, the best gain of a connected component-like expansion rooted at that node, and then use a rerooting DP so that we can evaluate contributions from both sides of any query path efficiently. Then each query reduces to combining values along the path between u and v, which can be answered with LCA and prefix aggregation.

Algorithm Walkthrough

We now describe a construction that converts the tree into a structure where each node encodes the best contribution achievable when the 2-path “expands” through it.

  1. Root the tree at an arbitrary node and compute parent-child structure. This allows us to treat every edge directionally when computing subtree contributions.
  2. Define a base value at each node equal to its vertex weight. This is the reward we always get if we include the node in any visited region.
  3. For every directed edge from a node to its child, compute the best net gain of going into that child subtree and returning. If we go from node u into child v, any detour must traverse edge (u, v) twice, so the contribution is the best value inside v’s subtree minus 2 times the edge weight, plus any additional detours deeper inside. This leads naturally to a tree DP where we compute, bottom-up, the best “closed walk contribution” of each subtree.
  4. Store for each node the best contribution of taking all profitable detours starting at that node and staying inside its subtree. This DP can be computed in postorder by accumulating positive gains from children. The logic is that if entering a subtree yields positive net gain, we take it; otherwise we ignore it.
  5. Perform a rerooting DP so that each node also knows the best contribution from the rest of the tree outside its subtree. This ensures that every node can evaluate contributions in all directions, not just downward.
  6. Precompute LCA structure and prefix aggregates over the root-to-node paths. For each node, maintain its accumulated best contribution along the root path so that path queries can be answered by subtraction.
  7. For a query (u, v), compute the sum of contributions along the unique path between u and v using LCA decomposition. The answer is the vertex sum along the path plus all beneficial subtree detours attached to nodes on that path, minus edge penalties already absorbed in the DP transitions.

A key subtlety is that subtree detours are independent once the main path is fixed. This independence is what allows aggregation: no detour interacts with another because any revisit is confined to its own subtree and pays a fixed local cost.

Why it works

The DP enforces that every detour is evaluated in isolation as a “closed excursion” that starts and ends at the same node. Since each edge can be used at most twice, every excursion corresponds exactly to entering a subtree and returning along the same path, which is fully captured by the 2× edge cost term. Once all such excursions are compressed into node-local gains, any valid 2-path decomposes into a base simple path plus a disjoint set of independent excursions attached to its nodes. This decomposition is unique, so maximizing each local component independently yields the global optimum.

The implementation starts by rooting the tree at node 0 and building parent and depth tables for LCA queries. The binary lifting table allows jumping ancestors in logarithmic time, which is essential because each query reconstructs a path.

The down array computes, for each node, the best gain obtainable by taking profitable excursions into its children. The term a[v] - 2*w reflects entering and exiting a subtree via one edge. If this gain is positive, it is added to the node’s contribution; otherwise it is ignored.

For each query, the function computes the LCA and then walks from each endpoint up to the LCA, accumulating node contributions. Each node contributes its value plus its precomputed subtree gain. The LCA node is counted once.

The subtle implementation detail is that contributions are accumulated while climbing the tree, not stored as prefix sums. This is simpler but still efficient because each step uses O(1) ancestor jumps amortized per node per query path, and correctness relies on the fact that we only traverse paths explicitly needed for the query endpoints.

For a single-node query, the algorithm directly returns the node’s value plus any positive subtree gains. Since there are no edges, no penalties are applied, and the DP correctly yields zero for all down contributions, matching the expected result.

For chain-like trees, the LCA computation reduces to a simple upward traversal, and each node contributes exactly once along the path. Since no branching exists, all down values are zero, and the solution correctly reduces to summing vertex values along the path.

For star-shaped trees, all detours are attached directly to the center node. The DP aggregates all positive child gains into the center, and every query passing through the center correctly collects those contributions exactly once, since each subtree is independent and cannot be double counted.
